The Matjes Days 2009
" Of to the Matjes Days " 5 th to the 7th of June 2009
This is the time of year when everything in Emden revolves around the small fishes and this year is especially important because it is the 20th anniversary this year. The tradition comes from the Emden Herring Fishers more than 450 years ago . Matjes fishing was how many families earned their keep . In 1969 ,the East Frisian herring fishing was removed to Bremerhaven. That's why the Emder town fathers resolved to remind themselves yearly of the old traditions by celebrating the Matjes Days.
Many traditional ships from far and away sail into the Binnenhafen and the Ratsdeft during these days and bring back a feeling from the past bringing a touch of seafarers romantic to the town. Many Shanty choirs perform live music adding to the maritime atmosphere. Songs are sung into different languages which tell about the rough customs aboard the fishing ships.
Throughout the weekend there is a variety of live music and bands entertaining shoppers and visitors until the early hours of the next morning. Another tradition is the Matjes Run organised by the Emden running club which goes through the town center and is a total of 10 kilometres.
